Welcome to Chemiks2008!
Chemistry Gimiks is an annual activity sponsored
by the Chemistry Department of Xavier University. This project aims to work
towards providing high school students with adequate preparation for college chemistry and to
foster appreciation and interest in the chemistry profession. The 4 exciting days
promise an exploration of the world of matter through video shows / multimedia
lectures, guided group explorations and workshops, laboratory exercises and
chemical demonstrations, industrial plant and ecological tours
with actual environmental samplings, career talks from chemists in the academe
and industry, and others. This project is intended for incoming 4th year high school students from the city and neighboring
munipalities.

HISTORY
Chemistry Gimiks was previously entitled ChemStart. The organizers found
the activities more like educational 'gimiks' than real hard work, thus changed its title to Chemiks. Chemiks
started in 2003 with multimedia lectures, plants tours, exciting laboratory exercises, and web accessing.
OBJECTIVES
To provide students with basic knowledge and skills through hands-on experience
in developing an appreciation on the role, relevance and marvels of chemistry and the chemistry profession.
To provide
students with the proper orientation and attitude towards science.
To orient students towards sustainable development
and appropriate technology.
